All the recent summer reading lists I have seen are largely non-fiction or intellectual fiction
Here is my list of random recommended trashy SciFi summer reading (and a small amount of fantasy) published since the year 2000.
"Read storm / tweet storm" format stolen from @pmarca
Ninefox Gambit (Machineries of Empire Book 1)
"Starship Troopers meets Apocalypse Now – and they’ve put Kurtz in charge... An unmissable debut.’
Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch Book 1)
The only novel ever to win the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards. A ship AI is faced with treachery and has a single human body to inhabit as it seeks vengance.
"Jean le Flambeur is a post-human criminal, mind burglar, confidence artist, and trickster. Now he's confined inside the Dilemma Prison, where every day he has to get up and kill himself before his other self can kill him."
Lady of Mazes
Post-singularity novel that feels like 2 or 3 books in one as you transverse the AI driven world of the future.
The Water Knife
"In the near future, the Colorado River has dwindled. When rumors of a game-changing water source surface in Phoenix, detective, assassin, and spy, Angel Velasquez is sent south, hunting for answers"
Wind Up Girl
"What happens when calories become currency? What happens when bio-terrorism becomes a tool for corporate profits? Bacigalupi delivers one of the most highly-acclaimed science fiction novels of the 21st century."
"Binti is a supreme read about a sexy, edgy Afropolitan in space! It's a wondrous combination of extra-terrestrial adventure and age-old African diplomacy. Unforgettable!"
The Craft Sequence
Entertaining fantasy series where magic is nothing more then contract law or consulting.
Root words that hack your brain.
Stories of Your Life And Others
"Understand" is one of my favorite sci fi short stories.
Meh writing, great ideas, in the few years leading up the singularity.
"Among Others is the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment"
"Two months since a myriad of alien objects clenched about the Earth, screaming as they burned. Who should we send to meet the alien, when the alien doesn't want to meet?"
Old Man's War
"John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army."
City of Stairs
"The city of Bulikov wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world—until its divine protectors were killed.... Into this city steps Shara Thivani, an accomplished spy, dispatched to catch a murderer"
"The body you are wearing used to be mine" begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when awakes in London surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind.
Name Of The Wind
Plusses: one of the best works of fantasy in the last 20 years. Downside - the author has been stuck writing book 3 of the series for the last decade.
"Advancements in nanotechnology have enabled us to control aging. We’ve genetically engineered mosquitoes to feast on carbon, ending air pollution." A guy whose job is to train AIs to have a sense of humor gets caught up in conspiracy.
"A tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager’s city."
The Poppy War: A novel
"A brilliantly imaginative talent makes her exciting debut with this epic historical military fantasy, inspired by the bloody history of China’s twentieth century and filled with treachery and magic."
The Coldest Girl In Coldtown “One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her ex-boyfriend, infected and on edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret” https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BAXFB3C/ref=dbs_a_w_dp_b00baxfb3c …
