Hardly know where to start with this. Ignorance and misunderstanding in almost every word. I’ve got 10 mins though, and a nice sunny cafe table, so here goes. 1/

The Chancellor is not risking negotiations and it is not scaremongering. The EU27 has it’s own preparedness notices and analysis, as does UKGov, that confirms what he says. It is not news to anyone but a few crackpot MPs applying the method of climate-change denial to Brexit. 2/

He is not risking the economy. No Deal (and indeed any) Brexit is risking the economy He is attempting to give economic actors some semblance of a chance to prepare mitigating measures. It’s probably too late to do to much, but at least it’s something. 3/

Negotiation is not poker. You win in poker by secrecy, bluff and subterfuge. In Negotiations, you win by finding a way for you to get as close as possible to what you want while your opposite number gets the same, particularly if you are looking at an ongoing relationship. 4/

To do this, you need goodwill and trust, the opposite of what your need in poker. You don’t do that by insulting your Oppos’ intelligence by bullshitting them with stuff they know is not true. 5/

Particularly when you are the weaker party, with more to lose from no deal, and that is obvious to all, treating the other party as if you do not need them is not a great way forward. It’s also embarassing. 6/

If you are buying a generic widget, so be it. If you are negotiating with the only supplier who can supply a component that you cannot continue without, it’s pig headed stupidity. The EU is the sole supplier here. 7/

The UK does not have any other option for an agreement with the EU than the EU. 8/

No deal is demonstrably not better than a bad deal, unless you are a tin-foil hat ERG MP who believes that you can eat sovereignty, and that project fear is a conspiracy by ideologically europhile economists, experts, industry assocs & chief executives. 9/

I’m no fan of Hammond, but he does appear to have at least a basic grasp of some of the realities facing the country. Unlike the crackpots in the ERG. 10/10
