Police weirdness #4307
I get stopped whilst walking home from the store:
👮‍♀️: Speak English?
Me: Yes
👮‍♀️: Why are you here?
Me: I live here
👮‍♀️: Did you come on boat?
Me: Uhm, no
👮‍♀️: Are you sure?
Me: Yes, I came via plane.
👮‍♀️: Answer our questions please! Do you work?

Me: I am answering. Yes I work.
👮‍♀️: Where are your papers?
(I hand them my passport, which is a legal requirement in Spain.)
👮‍♀️: And your work papers? (Sounding agitated)
Me: I don’t carry that around with me, besides I have my own business.

👮‍♀️: Come to the station with us. (Quite angry now, still holding my passport)
Me: No, what have I done? (Take passport back from them)
👮‍♀️: Come with us!
Me: No, for what reason, you legally need to tell me why.
👮‍♀️: We’ll let you off with a warning
(They now walk away)
Me: 🤷🏾‍♂️

This doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, I’m reminded that I am “other”, regardless of how I conduct myself.
