NEW: We polled more than 13k+ to understand what’s driving people to say “there’s too much political correctness” vs. “there is too much “prejudice.”

tl;dr: It’s views of privilege and discrimination, not free speech, that’s serves as a fault line for PC.

It’s a common polling question to ask whether there is "too much political correctness” or "too much prejudice.”

The question is very divisive.  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war

Here’s the demographic look of those who said “too much PC” and “too much prejudice.”

Those who said there is “too much PC” in the country are disproportionately white, male, Republican and supportive of Trump.  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Nearly half (47%) of those who said there is “too much political correctness” in the country are white men 😬.  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

When it comes to "free speech," there’s a lot of agreement between the two groups — most agree they can say how they really feel about hot-button issues like race and sexuality.

Getting more specific on those issues created more divide. We polled on:

• Black Lives Matter
#MeToo
• Transgender issues

Of the topics listed, people were least confident saying they could express their true feelings on Islam.  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Here’s where things get more interesting:

Most Americans, including those who said there’s “too much prejudice,” agreed with a number of statements concerning the cultural impact of so-called "political correctness."  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Agreed “people should be able to say what they really think, even when it might offend”:
65% All adults
76% of those who said there’s “too much PC”
56% of those who said there’s “too much prejudice”
 https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Agreed “the ‘rules’ about what you can and cannot say are changing so fast it’s hard to keep up”:
72% All adults
83% of those who said there’s “too much PC”
63% of those who said there’s “too much prejudice”
 https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Agreed “the current climate prevents some from saying what they believe because they might offend others”:
75% All adults
84% of those who said there’s “too much PC”
67% of those who said there’s “too much prejudice”
 https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Findings also show the term “politically correct” has become toxic.

Just 34% consider themselves “PC.” But more than 2x that (75%) said they follow a rough definition of what it means to be PC, without us mentioning the term (split-sampled this baby)
 https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Some of the biggest divides between the two groups were on privilege and discrimination.

Just 18% of the “too much PC” crowd said people don’t take discrimination seriously enough. 60% of the “too much prejudice” group said the same.
 https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

The groups were also near mirror opposites on perceptions of the “real advantages” white people and black people have.  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Political party is also divisive on this.

72% of Dems say *white people* don’t recognize the real advantages they have
75% of GOP say *black people* don’t recognize the real advantages they have

The last part of this massive PC-Prejudice poll was inspired by @PaulDjupe 🙏

We wanted to see whether, if primed to make 'out-group' members seem 'in-group,' people were less tolerant of politically *incorrect* rhetoric.

They were!  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Half of respondents were primed with a sentence presenting Muslims, often seen as an ‘out-group’ by Republicans, as part of their ‘in-group.’

Then we asked whether politicians should be able to say something politically incorrect about Muslims.  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

Republicans were 31 points *less likely* to agree a politician should be able to say "the values of Islam are un-American" if they were primed with the sentence "Many Muslims have served in the U.S. military."

All adults were 15 points less likely.  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/

But this is not a phenomenon unique to one party.

Democrats were 20 points *less likely* to agree politicians should be able to say "traditional masculinity has gotten toxic" if they were primed with the sentence: "Fewer men are fathering children."  https://morningconsult.com/2019/04/24/pc-and-prejudice-gauging-divides-in-americas-culture-war/
