It's not the main issue, but my mind always returns to the same question about these people: what is the story that Bill Barr tells Bill Barr about Bill Barr? Nobody thinks they're the bad guy. He's got some story in his head about his behavior that justifies it. But ... what?
I return to this again & again. Like, take Kirstjen Nielsen. She had some story to tell herself in the bathroom mirror that ended in, "and thus, administering & defending a policy of ripping families apart is Good." But ... what's that story?
Like, Trump has no internal life. He doesn't need a self-justifying story. But people like Barr or Nielsen or Tucker Carlson or ... take your pick, they have brains! It must take at least a little bit of cognitive work for them to avoid the obvious conclusions about themselves.
