Solid numbers but one soft spot in April’s jobs report was manufacturing employment. Factories added 4,000 jobs in April and revised figures showed no growth in March. Manufacturing had been adding a robust average of 22,000 jobs a month in the 12 months before February.
2. The White House says USMCA, the NAFTA replacement it negotiated with Canada, Mexico last Fall, will boost job growth, but both Republicans and Democrats are opposed to various aspects of USMCA; manufacturing job growth has dipped since last October over USMCA‘s uncertain fate.
