It's Public Service Recognition Week. Let's show some gratitude & optimism. Thank a public servant. These patriots put your interests before their own. My hope for our future is that the best and brightest young people will go into public service—where they can make a difference.

I encourage young people to go into government every chance I get. Even in these dark times, I still think it's a great experience (at most agencies). At the entry level, you'll have several layers of career supervisors insulating you from the political appointees.

My unsolicited advice is this: Reject the pessimism and cynicism that enemies of democracy want us to feel; choose optimism; believe you can make a difference; take action.
