I am so happy for Amanda Eller and livid at trolls coming out of the woodwork to suggest that she needs, what, better hiking skills?? What cruel, ignorant criticism. This woman’s skills, perseverance, and presence of mind are astonishing. My heart goes out to her and her family.
I’m also struck by the chorus of “well, she shouldn’t have hiked alone.” Which is leveraged far more often at women than men, and—in many parts of the world—would mean basically going nowhere without a buddy/chaperone. It’s fearmongering for control, usually from a distance.
You know what happens when women go hiking alone? They’re fucking powerful. That’s what happens. That’s why we can’t stand it.
