In 1998 you could order movies (encoded on DVD) from Netflix using your computer and play that movie DVD after it arrived via mail on your computer’s DVD drive.
2. Netflix is now worth $151 billion its biggest competitors at launch such as Blockbuster either folded or got absorbed into bigger players (NBC, HBO).
This is how the founders of Netflix (who were inspired by Amazon) tested out whether their idea would succeed.
3. In 2000, when Netflix relied on US Postal Service for delivery of their DVDs, they were losing money and offered to be acquired by Blockbuster for $50 million. Blockbuster declined. In 2010, Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 protection due to strong competition from Netflix.
