I often think that one of the reasons the original Alien worked so well was down to the working class characters; they were the film's heart, personable and memorable, and that's something later installments in the franchise lost as they strayed from that central thesis.

Ridley Scott's follow ups floundered for a lot of reasons, mainly needless explanations of the origins of the alien that only took away from the mystery, and the pretentious philosophical musings from Fassbender's David.

Ironically enough, it ended up being Danny McBride who was one of the best things about Covenant.
