If @jeffreygoldberg says he was misquoted I believe him. I also know him to be a good guy and someone of conscience who cares about issues like equity. That said, the idea that only a white man can write a long-form article is as offensive as the bias we see every day.
There is no excuse...none...for an major publication or any publication of any sort not to both strive for and achieve gender equity and real ethnic diversity. Not in 10 years. Right now. And not only because it is just but because it makes a better publication.
You can't cover the world unless your team looks like the world, is in touch with the world, brings diverse perspectives. Unions should demand this. So should readers. Don't subscribe to publications that don't meet acceptable standards in this regard. Don't advertise in them.
And again, without comment regarding Jeff who I admire and like very much, if you are a 161 year old publication like the Atlantic, supposedly promoting thoughtful, decent values and every one of your senior most editors has been a white male, it is time for some introspection.
