Daniel Sinclair @_DanielSinclair Building for young people. Not reading @danielsunread. Lurking behind likes and thinking about social media, communication, & China. Jul. 29, 2019 1 min read

We're watching China build concentration camps fueled by a warrantless surveillance state. We're watching human rights and the democratic process undermined around the globe. We're tweeting about it — and then going to work to build it. What the fuck.  https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/j5wyjy/amazon-told-police-it-has-partnered-with-200-law-enforcement-agencies

Today in Wired: downplaying Social Credit. It is true that the immature coverage of China has created a grandiose image of the system. But this overlooks the directionality, and momentum. That image is real for the people of Xinjiang. Everywhere is next.  https://www.wired.com/story/china-social-credit-score-system/

The CCTV & facial recognition is real. The digital society backed by a single phone number is real. The Strike Hard Campaign & its digital infrastructure is real. Beijing has sovereignty over on-shore data, & questioning Social Credit is questioning the success, not the ambition.

Downplaying this is exactly why we're building it. "The more I look around, the more it seems like an American social credit system is springing up around us — and it doesn’t look all that different from China’s."  https://www.getrevue.co/profile/caseynewton/issues/china-s-social-credit-system-is-coming-to-america-186114

This is real. This is happening.

It starts with a homeland re-org & war on extremism. It starts with border expansions that strip the rights of two-thirds. It starts with decentralized institutional adoption of mass surveillance. It starts with a domestic drone industry. It's not China's creep I'm talking about.

"This cozy arrangement will continue unimpeded, as tech companies train their technology on our victims abroad, and then redeploy them against us at home... History will ask what you did. You will have to explain to your children what role you played" 😔  https://mijente.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Mijente-The-War-Against-Immigrants_-Trumps-Tech-Tools-Powered-by-Palantir_.pdf

It's becoming so hard to be optimistic about tech. We're on the path to lose the next global conflict. We have no choice but to ensure that the spirit of Maven and Anduril succeed. Yet, these tools are increasingly aimed within the homeland. We're in an arms race with ourselves.

"[Buxton] tracked [broker-purchased, aggregated] location data from the mobile devices of customers on Chick-fil-A properties Monday through Saturday, & then studied where those same customers ate on Sundays... [It] admits studies such as this one are fun"  https://www.dallasnews.com/business/restaurants/2019/08/23/chick-fil-customers-go-sundays-d-fw-company-answer-not-popeyes
