NEW: A majority of House Democrats now support opening an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, according to the latest WaPo whip count.

12 of 22 House Dem committee chairs back an inquiry.

16 of 24 House Dems on the Judiciary Cmte back an inquiry. 

77 House Democrats have called for an impeachment inquiry since Mueller’s May 29 statement.

24 House Democrats have called for an impeachment inquiry since Mueller’s July 24 testimony. 

Average Cook PVI of the 118 House Democrats supporting an impeachment inquiry: D +16.5

Average Cook PVI of all House Democrats: D +12.5

Average Cook PVI of the 24 House Democrats who have called for an inquiry since Mueller’s testimony: D +8.6 

Only 7 of the 118 House Democrats calling for an impeachment inquiry are from Republican-leaning districts, per the Cook Political Report. 

"The movement to oust President Trump from office crossed a new threshold Friday, with a majority of House Democrats endorsing an impeachment inquiry — a development that ramps up pressure on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has resisted such a move.” 

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released last month showed 59 percent of Americans believe the House should not begin impeachment proceedings against Trump, while 37 percent believe it should — including 61 percent of Democrats.
