California’s newest emissions report is full of really good news, thanks to the tenacity of our state environmental leaders and legislators.

Once again California’s transportation emissions have gone up, even while we’ve made impressive progress lowering emissions across virtually every other sector.

And once again, it’s the emissions from private, passenger cars that are going up, even as Californians are buying and driving more low-emission vehicles than ever.

Learning that nearly one-third of California’s emissions come from our own cars was so troubling to me that I spent three months reporting a story trying to find out why that figure remains stubbornly high.
