If you grew up in the Midwest, you've probably had this potluck dish that was immortalized in an iconic @HermanMiller picnic poster.

When the Herman Miller book came out this year, I was tickled to find the recipe card printed right there in the book—but as designer Steve Frykholm told me this week, he took a few creative liberties.

Seven layer salad was an easy one-dish dinner in our Missouri backyard on humid summer nights. After testing several recipes, and consulting my mom, I've determined the best possible layer combinations to optimize color and crunch.

Important seven layer salad findings:

❄️ Do NOT thaw the peas
🥓 Bacon is of course optional but impossible to substitute
😋 Really, a half-jar of mayonnaise

Also be sure to watch this delightful @DressCodeNY video where Steve Frykholm talks about creating his sketches by chopping and piling the vegetables on a Xerox machine.
