60 years ago today, Miles Davis released Kind of Blue.
And 10 years ago today, I released Kind of Bloop, an 8-bit tribute album that started as a fun use of Kickstarter, and ended up being a huge pain in my ass.
And now it's free for everyone. Enjoy!
I know I'm biased, but I think this is one of the best chiptune albums ever made. Thanks to @CHRISdelCAMINO, @Disasterpeace, @sergiodeprado, @Shnabubula, and @virtjk for making it better than I could have possibly imagined.
Apparently, many of you never heard the story of the copyright battle over Kind of Bloop's original cover artwork, which led to me paying the photographer that shot the original photo of Miles Davis a $32,500 settlement. That delightful story is here. https://waxy.org/2011/06/kind_of_screwed/ …
That story led to a lot of interesting legal analysis from internet lawyers, but the grey areas of copyright law and fair use are plenty. Here's a great example from just last month, in a case that sounds strikingly similar to mine. https://petapixel.com/2019/07/03/judge-rules-fair-use-in-photographers-copyright-case-against-andy-warhol/ …
