Trump after Parkland:

“We certainly have to strengthen background checks.”

Trump after El Paso & Dayton:

“We need meaningful background checks so that sick people don’t get guns.”

Trump on Sunday:

“We have very strong background checks right now."

New WaPo reporting tonight from @jdawsey1 & @DavidNakamura:

“President Trump appears to be backing away from potential support for gun background check legislation, according to White House aides, congressional leaders and gun advocates” 

“During his week-long vacation...[Trump] focused on...the possibility of an economic downturn, contentious trade talks with China, his 2020 reelection campaign and concerns about how the media portrayed the size of the crowd at his campaign rally in NH” 


The Atlantic reports that President Trump called NRA chief Wayne LaPierre this afternoon to tell him that universal background checks were off the table.
