Politicians like Nikki Haley fail to mention that we already have socialized healthcare (VA) and education (military/ROTC) in the US; and those covered by “socialized healthcare” in US don’t pay $1500 for a root canal which those not covered by it do.
Life expectancy in US is correlated to education - those with a college degree live on average 10 years longer than those who don’t. Many developed countries have figured out that free (or socialized cost) college also results in better overall healthcare outcomes long term.
In part this is due to degreed folks in US making more $ at jobs that offer healthcare coverage (incl dental and vision) and paid vacation, while those without a college degree work longer hours at lower paying jobs, skimping on healthcare and vacations.
People visiting US from Europe and Australia are often shocked to find out that many Americans can’t afford to take vacations; our obsession with GDP growth tends to mask the underlying societal impacts of people working long hours simply to break even.
