Whether intended or not, impeachment is a trap that will snap shut on the GOP after the Senate trial is over. Why? Well, the Ukraine probe isn't ending; therefore we can be sure that—not long after the GOP Senate votes to acquit—damning evidence will emerge. What'll they do then?
(Mind you, the evidence is already damning. But my research—including on prior attempts to solicit bribes from the Ukrainians by Trump—suggests that in the weeks/months after the impeachment trial, Trump's guilt will only seem more obvious, making the GOP acquittal look obscene.)
(Keeping in mind they already know he's guilty now—but think they can get away with an acquittal politically—what does the Senate GOP do when, at a future date, additional intel emerges that makes Trump's guilt filthily obvious? It'll be too late for the Senate GOP to turn back.)
(This is an angle I haven't seen discussed. Isn't there a sense in which the Democratic rush to impeachment helps the Democrats—as not only do they impeach him with sufficient evidence, but can keep looking for *more* evidence that'll make any GOP acquittal a national disgrace?)
