Rep. James McGovern, chair of the Rules Committee, kicks off today's proceedings with what "shocks me" about the impeachment process: That his Republican colleagues won't criticize what Trump did.
Though he opposed Clinton's impeachment, McGovern conceded what he did was wrong.
"The President of the United States is rolling out the welcome mat for that kind of foreign interference... The evidence is clear as it is overwhelming."
"It's no secret" that Trump has a penchant for autocrats and dictators, citing Putin, Duterte and Erdogan.
McGovern: "The question is this: Are we willing to fight for this democracy?"
"History is testing us. We can't control what the Senate will do, but we can decide whether we pass that test."
Sticking to process critiques, the Committee's top Republican Rep. Cole calls the Democrats' outcome "preordained."
The Senate GOP openly plans to rig the trial to an acquittal.
