This is what I mean about politics becoming zealotry. This morning I’ve seen folks say this about Sanders, Yang, Buttigeig, and now Warren. This isn’t political loyalty, it’s idolatry. And it’s gross.
Truly, I understand there is desperation in this moment. What more could we want than a hero to save us. But not a single candidate in the field will. Not one. WE will save us. We will do it by electing a person we admire, and then agitating that person like no ones business.
Or we will elect someone who annoys the hell out of us and doesn’t get it. And then we will agitate them into causing us the least harm and cajole them into doing a few really good things.
And we’ll create new ways of thinking and leading and organizing and creating community and then we’ll push more people to adopt that. But saviors ain’t it. Your faves don’t need you harassing people to see their brilliance - they will prove themselves or they won’t.
And who they do or don’t prove it to will say something we should all pay attention to.
