Tren Griffin @trengriffin I work for Microsoft. Previously I was a partner at Eagle River, a private equity firm established by Craig McCaw. I am on the board of directors of Kymeta. Feb. 14, 2020 1 min read

1/ One of the best talks I have heard on finding/being a mentor and finding an immense passion was given by Bill Gurley at the University of Texas  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmYekD6-PZ8  Gurley called the talk "Runnin' Down a Dream: How to Succeed and Thrive in a Career You Love" (9/14/2018.)

2/ What Gurley talks about was never more clear to me than in 1994, the year I was one of four founding employees of a startup backed by Bill Gates and Craig McCaw. It was also the year I was introduced to Michael Mauboussin by Michael Larson, who introduced me to Bill Gurley.

3/ Bill Gurley advises people to:

"Hone your craft.

Develop mentors in your field.

Embrace peer relationships in your field.

Always be gracious and humble."

NEVER stop learning. Be a learning machine. Learn from the very best people. Read, read and read. Think and rethink

4/ Craig McCaw asked me to have lunch this week and I walked by my old office. It reminded me of the day in 1994 when a wonderful investor named Jerry St. Dennis delivered a set of binders to me which printed out everything Buffett and Munger had ever said in a public setting.

15/ 1994 was before you could just find what you wanted on the Internet. Jerry St. Dennis employed researchers to find all this printed material and he knew I liked to read. He dropped by later and said: "You are the sort of person who will actually read all this." He was right.

6/ To repay Jerry's gift and to organize my thinking, I compiled this "book of Charlie Munger" for myself that you can read for free.  https://25iq.com/quotations/charlie-munger/  If you want it fully footnoted and edited you need to buy my book which 100% benefits a charity.  https://www.amazon.com/Charlie-Munger-Complete-Investor-Publishing/dp/023117098X/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
