Attorney @SDonziger, who obtained a $9.8 billion verdict against Chevron in Ecuador, "should be allowed to resume the practice of law,” the referee over his bar proceedings recommended.

This big wrinkle in a decades-old legal saga broke late yesterday.

“The extent of his [Donziger's] pursuit by Chevron is so extravagant, and at this point so unnecessary and punitive, while not a factor in my recommendation, is nonetheless background to it.”

- bar referee John Horan, an ex-SDNY prosecutor, in a passionate 36-page report

Spanning nearly three decades and continents, Chevron's legal saga over its oil drilling in the Ecuadorean Amazon and its full-bore counteroffensive is a big story to be told.

More context on the top of the thread and more to come.

Following the case for decades, @CourthouseNews will continue to track its developments as Donziger enters more than six months of house arrest in an extraordinarily rare criminal prosecution.

After SDNY balked, a judge charged him himself.
