For @RFERL, I wrote about how Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russia-backed forces in the Donbas are bracing for the spread of the coronavirus to the front line and what the military is doing to protect them.

You may have thought that with the coronavirus ravaging countries around the world wars would pause.

In eastern Ukraine, there has been a slight uptick in fighting.

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said today that it had recorded 19 conflict-related civilian casualties in Ukraine in March, including two deaths. Compared with Feb, "this is a 280% increase and the highest monthly figure since September 2019."

A powerful image underscoring the fact that despite the spread of the coronavirus, the war in eastern Ukraine grinds on. Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the first week of April; 11 more wounded.
