What's the difference between a service business and a productized service business?: (thread)

A question from inside the @visualizevalue community.

An answer:

How much of it is productized?

What percentage of the work is repeatable on a per client basis?

Not an exact science, but humor me with an anecdote: “building websites” is no different than “digging holes”.

Unless you know what type of holes you dig (how wide, how deep, in what terrain) you’re just showing up with a shovel and waiting for someone who’s paying you to yell stop (which, by the way, they won’t).

To go a little further,

A productized web design product might sound something like this: “We help esports athletes build the centerpiece of their digital media brand in 8 weeks.”

A web design service sounds like this: “We build websites.”

One will make you rich.
The other will drive you insane.
