Swarthmore's @spbhanot and I are also releasing a new working paper drawn from the same @Civiqs survey sponsored by @PennLDI.

Title: "Partisan Polarization and Resistance to Elite Messages: Results from a Survey Experiment on Social Distancing"

URL:  1/6

I originally tweeted about some of the cross-tabs of the online survey of 1,912 Pennsylvania residents conducted April 4th-8th here: The paper provides additional descriptive statistics & models of various outcomes. 2/6

The paper also details a new survey experiment in which some respondents read that social distancing policies were "urged" by elites including "public health experts, government officials, and the media" while others read that social distancing was simply one proposal. 3/6

Why? In an environment with low trust in elites & polarized messages about COVID-19, policies pushed by elites may generate a backlash, especially among Republicans. But if anything, we found the reverse, and certainly no evidence of backlash. 4/6

We find no strong differences by partisanship, which is noteworthy for an online sample that's likely to have many highly engaged Democrats and Republicans... 5/6

but we do find that those 65 and older--those most susceptible to severe illness should they get COVID-19--are especially *responsive* to a policy urged by elites. 6/6
