The retraction of @TheLancet HCQ study is a reminder that scientific publication process largely worked.

In the middle of a pandemic, we are doing science at unprecedented speed.

A short thread

That means working with data sources that may be unfamiliar, analyses at 10X normal speed, etc.

When science moves this fast, there will be more errors.

The key is to find those errors, correct them. Quickly.

That happened here.

But there is a second, critical point:

The second critical point is for those who communicate about science

Its important not to overstate the findings of any single study

On HCQ -- President and allies jumped on, promoted early studies.

Others have been quick to highlight studies that were also poor quality

The bottom line is that on HCQ, I don't know if its effective for treating people with COVID-19.

We are awaiting a good quality RCT (ideally more than one).

Until then, let's stay circumspect, say what we know -- and most importantly, what we don't.
