Of the 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017, 47% were not wearing seat belts. Decades after seatbelt laws and billions spent on education efforts, Americans still choose not to wear seatbelts. Not a surprise that so many today flout wearing masks.

Mask wearing leads to other critical behavior changes that slows the spread of Covid-19: China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong crushed the virus spread largely by use of masks. US has millions of people (led by Trump) who refuse to wear masks, see it as a badge of honor to go maskless.

CDC not mandating use of masks back in February will go down as the biggest blunder. "Federal health officials on Friday large gatherings that involve shouting, chanting or singing to “strongly encourage” use cloth face coverings to lower the risk of spreading the coronavirus."
