Recovery Trial in the UK has a big new finding

Dexamethasone was associated with reduced mortality in hospitalized patients who needed respiratory support.

Here's the press release:

 https://www.recoverytrial.net/files/recovery_dexamethasone_statement_160620_final.pdf

Short thread

First -- it is now a feature of this pandemic that most findings made public via press release with little data to provide context.

They could have easily put out a pre-print. Its frustrating but reality.

Second -- this is REALLY good news if it turns out to be true

One feature of COVID is that while some folks have mild disease, others get very, very sick.

We think the immune response is a major component of why some folks get so sick

Dexamethasone is a steroid that blocks/mediates the immune response. Its cheap and widely available

3/5

This clinical trial found reasonably large effects of giving people steroids.

The number needed to treat (NNT) to save one life for folks on the ventilator was 8!

NNT for others who needed oxygen support was 25

4/5

These are large effects.

Other clinical trials are also ongoing.

We need to see the full results.

But if this holds up -- this is very good news indeed!
