this is the kind of subtle bug that you will never, ever, ever find by reading lines of code, and staging is useless too.
figuring out how _specifically_ to trigger the bug is the hardest part. until then, your answer is "production".
Think of all the hours you've spent over your career trying to understand what your code was doing in production, flying mostly blind.
It is astonishing to me that we don't make engineering effectiveness more of a priority. Easier to justify headcount than tools. 😕
