Since Trump did not impose a travel ban on coronavirus hotspot Brazil until May 26, it’s unclear how many COVID-19 cases in Florida were imported from Brazil. 300,000 Brazilians live in Florida — the largest Brazilian community in US; 1 million Brazilians visit FL each year.

California is another major destination for Brazilians — especially Los Angeles — COVID-19 cases have soared in California in recent weeks. It will take serious investigative journalism to surf through the data noise and figure out how many US cases got imported via Brazil.

Trump allowed flights into US from coronavirus hotspot Brazil until May 28. No temperature checks for arriving passengers — so how many cases got imported into Florida via Brazil? Miami, a top destination for Brazilians, is seeing record number of cases.

With Florida shattering US records for single-day rise in coronavirus cases, Miami Rep. Donna Shalala calls for 14-day stay-at-home order and mandatory mask rule. Florida is notoriously bad about reporting hospitalizations but researchers would want to dig into impact of Brazil.

Florida’s economy (no income tax) relies on tourists, especially from Brazil (who stay twice as long and spend twice as much as the typical tourist) — did Trump and DeSantis delay imposing travel restrictions on Brazil to “protect tourism” and end up importing cases from Brazil?
