Vietnam’s 🇻🇳 success in fighting COVID-19 spread — had 0 deaths — is remarkable on so many fronts: the country of 100 million people shares a nearly 1000-mile long border with China. Beyond masks and aggressive testing, Vietnam’s low obesity (2% vs 40% for US) helped greatly.

China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore have obesity rates in the 3%-6% range. Communities in US and European nations that suffered the largest number of COVID-19 infections and casualties have obesity (and linked co-morbidity) rates in the 20%-50% range — single biggest factor.

In US and Europe, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues are behind both the skyrocketing obesity and coronavirus infections, yet many jurisdictions raced to reopen such businesses, which employ millions of low-paid workers who lack health insurance and rely on tips.

COVID-19 crisis is ultimately an obesity crisis, which US business lobbies helped inflict by fighting sugar taxes and regulations — in recent years, the number of junk food places and bars have soared in many US jurisdictions, setting US up for failure when coronavirus struck.
