No more "stupid pet tricks": How coronavirus changed James Corden’s late-night style

In the latest episode of The Times’ TV podcast, “Can’t Stop Watching,” host Yvonne Villarreal asks “The Late Late Show” host James Corden how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed his approach to his (now-remote) variety show.

“When I took the job, my frames of reference were like Fallon doing lip-sync battles, Kimmel [doing] mean tweets and Letterman… doing like stupid pet tricks and I was like, ‘Yeah, I can do this.’” But recent events have made it more of a challenge.

As episodes slimmed down, interviews got more in-depth.
“The conversation we had with Dr. Dyson was profound. Our interview with Joe Biden — I’m very proud of it. Talking with Nancy Pelosi. Talking with all of these people, I’ve really, really enjoyed."

Corden also opened up about his kids getting into the business.

L.A. Times' Robert Lloyd says that late-night interviews have become more like real conversations and because host and guest are looking into a camera, we’re placed into the middle of their virtual shared space, rather than as a member of an audience.
