Jefferson Kelley, a Reddit moderator, watched hate grow online for years. For example, when he booted hateful users off threads where Black people discussed personal experiences, racial slurs would pile up in his inbox.

Kelley and other moderators repeatedly pleaded with Reddit to back them up and take stronger action against harassment and hate speech. But Reddit never quite came through.

Reddit is moving to overhaul its content policy and ban some 2,000 subreddits in one of the most sweeping enforcement actions it has taken to date.

Last week, Kelley put in a request to take over the r/BlackFathers subreddit.

A father to 3 young children, he plans on reclaiming it and turning it into a supportive space for people like himself.
