The Boeing 747 is one of the most polluting jets. Travel slump brought on by coronavirus mismanagement means British Airways can now retire these polluting hulks four years ahead of schedule; the virus may “help” airline achieve net zero carbon emissions much earlier than 2050.

In the months leading up to the coronavirus, airline bosses had insisted it was impossible to cut back emissions due to soaring demand from global travelers. The virus showed that simply by cutting back unnecessary travel, all emissions goals could be met years ahead of schedule.

With coronavirus “helping” accelerate “net zero carbon emissions” for many industries and companies via reduced consumption and production, environmental baselines will be reset — giving scientists, researchers, engineers, and CEOs invaluable data on how to meet future CO2 goals.

But don’t count on industries to self-regulate their emissions. The 2008-2011 global financial crisis/Great Recession triggered by US financial sector caused a plunge in CO2 emissions as soaring unemployment led to cut in consumption/production. CO2 emissions increased again.

Biden as POTUS could rollback Trump administration’s new rule on auto emissions which rolled back Obama’s 2012 rule that required automakers’ fleets to average about 54 miles per gallon by 2025. Trump’s rule allows fleets to average about 40 miles per gallon.

Trump’s new standard for automakers would lead to nearly a billion more tons of planet-warming CO2 released and consumption of about 80 billion more gallons of gasoline over the lifetime of the vehicles built during the terms of the rule, according to a recent draft of the plan.

Incidentally, jurisdictions with the most coronavirus cases in the US are also those that had significant air pollution via airports and transit systems. Scientists have linked air pollution, which causes heart, lung and immune diseases, to increased risk of Covid-19 infections.
