Australia’s steps to bend down coronavirus curve (which I previously praised) have collapsed — new COVID-19 cases today were up 3500% vs June 22, after country opened up pubs, bars and restaurants. At this rate, Australia could record tens of thousands of new cases a day soon.

Nearly all the new cases were diagnosed in Victoria state, where infection numbers have started to rise, alarming officials. Melbourne, the state’s capital, started a six-week lockdown this month in an effort to slow the spread of the virus, but cases have continued to increase.

Meanwhile, New Zealand, which went hard and early to beat the coronavirus, is holding on to its good results (22 deaths overall) and its economy is doing better than expected, better than its bigger neighbor down under.  https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-newzealand/new-zealand-economy-doing-better-than-expected-finance-minister-says-idUSKCN24L0BY

Florida, however, makes Australia’s case count look manageable. The sunshine state has 4 million fewer residents than Australia but recorded 20X more cases today.

Florida: 9800 cases
Australia: 500 cases
