European diplomats have gathered inside the home of Svetlana Alexievich, the Belarusian Nobel laureate, to protect her from Lukashenko’s security forces and prevent her from being detained. Alexievich is a member of Tikhanovskaya’s coordination council and supports the protests.
All other members of the coordination council are jailed or in exile, including Tikhanovskaya, who in an interview with me published yesterday said that Lukashenko’s regime is “engaged in terror.” https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/christopherm51/belarus-svetlana-tikhanovskaya-interview-lukashenko-protests …
Maria Kolesnikova, one of the opposition leaders abducted off the street by masked security agents, tore up her passport and jumped out of a moving car to thwart the regime’s attempt to deport her to Ukraine yesterday. She’s in a Minsk pre-trial detention center now.
Maksym Znak, a colleague of Kolesnikova and member of the coordination council was also detained today.
Here’s Svetlana Alexievich early today after she said unknown men tried enter her apartment. She called for journalists to come to her place and speak with her. She’s also now joined by EU diplomats in her home.
Alexievich, last of the council not jailed or in exile says: “It was not the Coordination Council that revolted. The country revolted. I want to repeat what I always say. We were not preparing a coup. We wanted to prevent a split in our country. We wanted a dialogue to start...”
More Svetlana Alexievich: “First they kidnapped the country, now they’re kidnapping the best of us,” she writes. “Someone is ringing the door again.” https://pen-centre.by/2020/09/09/3779.html …
