High quality public services & social support programs are an enormously complex issue, not solved by shouting either "muh socialism" or "muh Sweden".
There's no advanced economy without some form of welfare state, and there's no politically plausible scenario where the US gets rid of its, nor should it. It's just rational to look at what works in other countries, with awareness that you can never just copy-paste.
In France, economic "conservatives" love to point at Germany's export-driven manufacturing model, which features lower taxes, less welfare, and low wages (they really like that part). They also don't mention that it features things like:
- Giving unions half the board seats.
- Funding those companies through local government-owned banks.
- A law banning foreign takeovers of German firms.
Life is complex! "Muh socialism" don't cut it.
