Working on designing missiles at Lockheed Martin might have a lesser human cost than working on AI software at FB. I'd like to see the establishment of a kind of Hippocratic Oath for the software engineering profession, in particular for ML engineers & researchers. Don't be evil.
To paraphrase Burke, "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good machine learning people to be just doing their job".
And I may be burning bridges, but I would rather be honest with myself and others, and say what I believe to be true. Staying silent and taking no sides is a safe strategy, but it's an endorsement of the status quo.
